Title:
How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed,
and Won Millions at the World Series of Poker
Author: Annie Duke
Publisher: Hudson Street Press
In 2004 Annie Duke became the only woman to
have won $2 million in World Series of Poker
Tournament of Champions. With that came her
first WSOP gold bracelet! Her book is a carefully
balanced narrative that fluctuates between two
threads – the story of the action packed
WSOP Omaha Hi-Low Split poker tourney and the
story of her life. And the scenarios for both
are as interesting, though it has to be said
that depending on your own mind set, you'll
be rooting for one - the game or the life story
- to come back.
As the authoress lets the story of her life
spill out of her book's pages, the reader gets
introduced to Annie's typical dysfunctional
family: Mom's drinking and playing solitaire,
and Dad's grading papers and trying to break
out of his genteel poverty teaching at a prestigious
prep school. Things get better when Annie's
older brother, poker champ Howard Lederer, learns
to beat the odds in card games and sports betting.
Mom begins working for her son. And Annie's
Dad goes on to write a series of entertaining
books.
But this is not the final happy ending in the
book, the ultimate happy ending happens when
Annie ends up a poker champ in her on right.
Along with narrating the story of Annie's march
to success, the book is also laced with tidbits
of information on different types of poker (focused
on Texas Hold'em and Omaha Hi-Lo) and a brief
description of the most prominent poker players
that dominate the spotlight nowadays.

Title:
Super System: A Course in Power Poker
Author: Doyle Brunson
Publisher: Cardoza
This poker book is a classic of sorts, having
been first published almost three decades ago
in 1970s. The book had caused quite a sensation
in the 70s and was branded by critics as a must
have for amateurs. It was nonetheless received
with irritation by the professionals who were
filled with an apprehension that Doyle Brunson
had given away too many poker secrets, thereby
allowing the amateurs to catch up. What was
true then remains true to this day. Doyle Brunson
did give a whole lot of information in his book,
information that is indispensable for any amateur
or professional alike.
The book has a comprehensive coverage of the
games from five-card draw to no limit hold'em.
But most interesting to read are the brilliant
caricatures of the famous players. Just a glimpse
of those masterfully done caricatures in print
is worth the price of the book. Then there is
the chapter on poker odds and statistics, which
remain accurate to this day. It has been a popular
pastime amongst many players to check and recheck
the statistics, hoping to catch a mistake in
Doyle's calculations. Needless to say they have
always failed. In his prime Doyle Brunson was
the world's best player at both limit and no
limit hold'em, quite famous for his nerves of
steel. And if any typical amateur aspires to
make a career out of poker then this book is
really almost priceless for him or her.

Title:
Little Green Book
Author: Phil Gordon
This is a fast paced book that Phil Gordon
has developed out of his experiences in playing
poker with the best players in the world. The
detailed analysis that he presents on every
aspect of the game makes it obvious that he
is one of those players who has in fact learned
form his victories at the table and also from
his losses in a myriad of tournaments and cash
games. No limit Texas Hold'em is a tough game
by any account, but the moral that can be derived
from Phil's Little Green Book is that anyone
can become a winning player, with the right
amount of courage, patience, aggression, observation,
and a deeply felt dedication to becoming a better
player.
As it is Phil Gordon, being the resident expert
and co-host of Celebrity Poker Showdown, is
a much sought after teacher of Texas Hold'em.
So don't even bother to think you can play "serious"
poker without studying this Little Green Book
inside and out. For No Limit Texas Hold'em players
in particular, Phil Gordon's take on the game
is worth many, many more times then the price
of the book. If anything - it is Phil's total
style that makes him a monster player in the
poker circuits. And with his book he offers
great new insight into the techniques that have
contributed towards making him the success that
he is today.
