| Myth 1: The bigger the office, the lesser
the politics thanks to sound HR policies! |
| Reality: You must be crazy. The bigger the company is, the
bigger the egos are. The dirtier the game gets. The water
becomes sludge. In big companies there is room for more
politics, more red tape, more layers to cut through, and more
egos to battle with. Only way for you to survive in such a dog eat
dog world is by mastering the art of influencing people so that
you become irreplaceable. You have to attain a position where
you can’t be fired and when time comes for a raise you’ll be the
person on minds of those who matter in the company. |
| Myth 2: Office Politics
happen only where there
is power play - The Senior
Management. |
| Reality: Yeah, right! Listen bubba, and
listen hard! Competition is common
when a group of people come together
to work for a common objective. People
would kill for getting their right foot
forward at the slightest opportunity and
you thought these people existed only in
the upper strata of your management?
Look around you. Do you see those shiny,
evil eyes in the dark? |
|
Myth 3: If you can’t beat
them, join them! |
| Reality: Not really! It depends on what
kind of conscience you haul around. You
see, I for one would never get embroiled
into these power games. If I don’t get
what I ought to get, I move on to other
avenues. I am not asking you to run away
from it all, I am only saying that you might
try to turn yourself into an even shrewder
politician to outmaneuver the office
strategists. And if you can’t outmaneuver
them then you better start looking for
another job. |
| |
| Myth 4: Working hard
will get me there! My academic performance,
for instance, is testimony
to that! |
| Reality: Managing people is an art that
can take you many places that formal
education cannot. Work isn’t going to
be like college. People are going to be
hyenas and you shouldn’t be the weak one
when you are among them. You will need
to unlearn a few things; learn to put up
with a lot. For instance, you and your best
buddies would huddle together during
exams and learn by helping each other
out. It is unlikely that you find this attitude here. You must have been taught to be
nice and kind to everyone. well, you can
be, to an extent, but you got to be careful
lest someone might trample you. You got
to master the art of people management
so that you can charm everyone and get
what you want. Plain hard work is needed
at construction sites and coal mines, not
in corporate cubicles. |

| Myth 5: Office Politics is
Bad, Stay Away from it! |
| Reality: Not really! Look, office politics
can make your life miserable, it can
increase your stress and might lead to
a burn out, but it isn’t something that
you would be better off if you avoided it.
If you are competent, hard working and
truly meritorious and productive, it is
really your responsibility to let everyone
know. You got to market yourself by
simply throwing some loaded indirect
statements about your contribution to
your company sometimes. Call it tootingyour-
own-horn, if you will, but if you don’t
do it, no one else will. If you remained
quiet expecting the world to look up to
you, you will be in for a total shock. You
don’t have to be obnoxiously boastful, but
you still have to be heard or get noticed.
Totally staying away from the office
politics will get you nowhere. |
