Interviews Indira Varma

Interview With -Indira Varma

Think of Indira Varma and as if on a magic carpet you are instantly transported into the enchanting world of Kama Sutra, the Kama Sutra that dares to envision a life subsumed of youth, beauty, vitality and sexuality. So much so that you almost look forward to a scenario where Indira Varma's real life becomes an extension of the famous character Maya she played with such finesse in the film Kama Sutra directed by Mira Nair. Almost a decade has passed since the movie was first released; yet the role played by Ms. Varma still remains in public memory. It is testimony to her histrionic talents that though this was her debut film, Indira was able to perform it with all the finesse of an experienced actress.

Thanks to her extremely realistic portrayal of a seductress, her fans may expect her to run down Rodeo Drive naked, be wildly flirtatious with anyone she meets, and be the most versatile seducer from whose charms no man or woman may ever escape. She is never supposed to have a husband or even a boyfriend, her entire life played out as an unending train of lust and ecstasy, the sexual zeitgeist, which propels her from one bed to other pleasuring men and women who are only too eager to partake of the temptations only she can offer. She says, "I love to find beauty in anything and everything." However, what makes Indira Varma tick is not sex, but pure love emanating from the core of her heart. Her humble nature was quickly revealed when I had the opportunity to interview the internationally acclaimed actress.

Her agent scheduled the telephonic interview for 10:00 in the morning, UK time. As I was calling from the US it was 4:00 AM my time. After learning of this Indira states she would have rescheduled the interview for later on in the day if she had known that I was calling from the US. While filming in India she recalls a time when all the actors and actresses were given servants to fetch water, food, and anything else they desired. Indira made an attempt to speak with them and the servants were pleasantly surprised at the notion of someone of Indira's stature wanting to speak with them. "After all we are all humans," she says with the innocence of a child. It was worth knowing who or what inspired her to become a film actress. I put this question to her. She can think of no one particular influence, but when she was young she saw the famous French mime Marcel Marceau and was so moved by the performance that she decided to go to drama school to become a mime or clown. She says, "One great thing about acting is of course the variety, the ability of the actor to be a different person from who they really are." She conveys to me the feeling of being pathologically honest. One who says what is truly in her heart. I ask her what was her most challenging role. No, she does not name the role of Maya in Kama Sutra.
