How to Eat Healthy and Work-Out While Traveling by Jacob Cherian

No matter how hard you try, you're likely to run into many bumps when it comes to managing your diet and fitness routine while traveling. What is even worse, a hectic itinerary can wreak havoc to your otherwise normal life. Moderation is key to keeping your body protected from the vagaries of climate and the environment. Here are a few ideas that will help you stay healthy when you are on the move.

Eating Right

When it comes to food, eat wisely - just as you ideally would at home. Most people are of the opinion that the fun of visiting a new place lies in enjoying the local cuisine. While this isn't necessarily a bad philosophy, at the same time you have to be sure that you do not enjoy the food at the cost of your health. You must find a sensible way to tantalize your taste buds. For example, if you've never eaten seafood eating at a restaurant that isn't near fresh water sources is not a good idea.

When you do find the right place, take your time in reading the menu before you start ordering your food. Sometimes the waiters tend to rush you, but you should refuse to be hurried. Your priority is to watch what goes inside your mouth. You also have to watch your portions as restaurants tend to serve too much. Drink plenty of fluids; particularly water during your travels and preferably before your meals. Avoid alcohol, if you can. The temptation is very much there if other members of your party are drinking, but alcohol is full of empty calories that can leave you bloated and dehydrated.

When choosing your dishes try to select foods that are steamed, roasted or broiled rather than those that are fried, sautéed, or creamed - they are loaded with calories. Remember that it's ok to ask the waiter to prepare the food to your liking and most chefs are happy to do it. Realistically speaking, fast food may be an inevitable part of a traveler's diet. But luckily, even fast food chains have now introduced healthier fare.

For instance, McDonald's has a grilled chicken, which is a great option for meat lovers. For vegetarians, there are paneer sandwiches. You should try to avoid combo meals and sauces and stick to natural fruits and sherberts rather than rich, sugary desserts. And in case you are traveling with family or friends it is a good idea to pack healthy snacks. Dried fruits and nuts can drive away those bad temptations that arise from traveling. It's all too easy to access junk food if healthy choices aren't around.

While traveling, it's easy to add on calories without realizing it. It would be nice to think that since you are on the move you're burning up calories so it's ok to eat anything, but in reality even a few days of indulgence can throw your exercise and diet routine out of sync.

Exercise

It may be an easy excuse not to exercise while traveling, but ignoring exercise will only make it harder for you to get into routine once you are back home. Moreover, moderate exercise can energize your mind and body and make you feel more active and alert. Exercise boosts energy levels, which is exactly what you need when you travel for business or pleasure. Many hotels and motels provide gyms and spas, so be sure to take advantage of that. In fact, you should make sure that you are staying in a hotel that has good workout facilities and a swimming pool.

In case you get stuck in a hotel without any gym or swimming pool, then you can try other avenues like climbing the staircase instead of using the elevator. In the morning, stretch and do light exercise to get the blood flowing and heart racing. If there are parks or trails for walking then you can start your day with a refreshing walk. But if much of your day is spent on sightseeing then you might even skip your workouts because you'll be doing a lot of walking anyway.

Remember to use your feet as transportation whenever you can. Instead of hopping into cabs, find out how far your destination is and plan to walk short distances. While you are at it, you may even bag the extra benefit of some accidental sight seeing. But be warned - you have to make sure that you have comfortable shoes on or the walking will result in more pain than pleasure. Anyone that wears business shoes for long periods of time knows how painful this can be.

Be cautious not to overdo the exercising part. If you're tired it is better to get rest than exercise. The last thing you want is to get sick during your vacation or business trip.
